Probably the most spectacular bug ever, triggered by a single faulty configuration file: A software update from security provider CrowdStrike for its product Falcon caused a global outage in recent days. Around 8.5 million Windows systems crashed and ended up in a blue screen loop. Airports, hospitals, and banks were also affected—likely the biggest IT failure in history.
The root cause was identified quickly, but it took days until all systems were stable again.
When incidents like this happen, I ask myself: What do I learn for my everyday life as a developer? Nothing special. It’s just another reminder of the importance of thorough testing and checks before release. Four-eyes principle and similar precautions. Work diligently, stay focused, and test before releasing. But despite all precautions, there is always this residual risk called “human.”
